Q: How about expansion and contraction in composite/plastic material?
How much gap should I allow for expansion?
Basically, you should allow 1/16" for every 20 degrees of temperature range.
Q: What do I need to do to get my deck project started?
First, you need to start a rough design of what you're thinking about building. This may mean using gardening hoses to design the basic shape of the proposed deck.
Q: What are the span requirements for composite decking?
Most decks use a 16" on-center joist span, but for a diagonal layout, use 12" on-center spacing, depending on the material. We recommend following the provisions of the IRC (International Residential Code).
Q: Do I need to get a building permit?
Always check with your local building department. In general, if you're deck is over 30" above the ground at any point, then you do need a building permit.
Q: Do I have to include lighting with stairs?
Always check with your local building department. If there are more than three stairs, then you do need illumination.
Q: Do I need to install railing?
Always check with your local building department. In general, if you're deck is over 30" above the ground at the edge or the stair, then you do need to install railing.
Q: How much does decking material fade in the sun?
Each material will fade differently depending on how it was made. We have built a Test Deck Area that tests how the different materials perform in the weather over time (our goal is to show everything we carry, but we are always adding on).
Q: Does the decking retain heat?
Yes. Most composite decking products retain more heat than wood products.
Q: Can decking be slippery?
Yes: Decking can be slippery. Slickness, of course, will vary according to material and maker.
Q: How many brands of composites does The Deck Superstore carry?
We carry 6 different brands of composite decking. Check them out on our Products page.
Q: Which brands are the best?
The best choice in decking products depends on what is best for your situation. Our showroom is a place where you can honestly appraise several product lines side by side, and determine which one is the best for your specific situation.
Q: Do the decking manufacturers also carry matching railings?
