Q: How about expansion and contraction in composite/plastic material? How much gap should I allow for expansion?
Basically, you should allow 1/16" for every 20 degrees of temperature range.

Q: What do you need to do to get your deck project started?
First, you need to start a rough design of what your thinking of building. This may mean using gardening hoses to design the basic shape of the proposed deck.

Q: What are the span requirements for composite decking?
Most decks use a 16" on-center joist span, but for a diagonal layout 12" is called for. We recommend following the provisions of the IRC (International Residential Code).

Q: Do you need to get a building permit?
It depends on your local area, so check there first. In general, if you're deck is over 30" above the ground at any point, then you do need a building permit.

Q: Do you have to include lighting with stairs?
If there are more than three stairs, then you need illumination.

Q: Do you need to install railing?
It depends on your local area, so check there first. In general, if you're deck is over 30" above the ground at the edge or the stair, then you do need to install railing.

Q: How much does decking material fade in the sun?
Each material will fade differently depending on how it was made. We have built a Test Deck that tests the weathering of many different materials over months and years (our goal is to show everything we carry, but we are always adding on).

Q: Does the decking retain heat?
Yes. Most composite decking products retain more heat than wood products.

Q: Can decking be slick?
Yes: Decking can be slick. Slickness, of course, will vary according to material and maker.
